Grant County Community Foundation Executive Director Bernadette Smyth held a holiday party at their office the afternoon of Dec. 16, 2023. Assistant to the director Mick Smith prepared the decorations and the beautifully set out (and delicious) food for the community members and board members. The come-and-go event presented a festive atmosphere for the attendees.

Michael Engleman named interim race director for Tour of the Gila 2024

Michael Engleman of Mission Sports Group LLC said his first encounter with the Tour of the Gila was when he raced it in 1987 in one of his first years as a cyclist.
Since then he has been a pro team director and/or team manager at the Tour of the Gila for women's pro teams, including Team T-Mobile and Twenty16. He also worked with development teams, such as the US Women's Cycling Development Program and the Amy D Foundation.
"I was lucky enough to work with amazing athletes like Kristin Armstrong, Clara Hughes and Mara Abbott," Engleman said. "Teams I worked with have won the women's pro individual Tour of the Gila Title five times."
Bayard considers a city administrator position

The town of Bayard held a work session and regular meeting November 27, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, Jose Diaz, and Eloy Medina. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.
The work session allows the council to ask questions about items on the agenda.
The council questioned the attendance to the court educational institute for newly elected judge Charles Kelly. Ramos said he would be flying to Albuquerque and renting a car. The Judges Association would pay for the accommodations. The council questioned him flying and not driving his car and Diaz said it had been done in the past. Medina said they had always driven. Ramos added his flight would cost $62.35 one way. Frances Gonzales commented it would be cheaper to fly and right now they airline company has a 20 percent off on flights. Ramos said he would purchase ten tickets now because of the sale. They would have a year to use those flights and would need them for the upcoming Municipal League conference.

Silver City / Las Cruces, NM – The following information is for distributing a Missing Endangered Person Advisory from the Silver City Police Department. For details, contact Silver City PD at (575) 388-8840.
Silver City PD is asking the public for assistance locating Maisie Yniguez, 42, of Silver City. She is 5'5" tall, weighs 220 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black long-sleeve shirt, yellow or tan shorts, and white shoes. She is believed to be in Las Cruces and was last seen on November 2nd at around 2:00 p.m. at Apodaca Park, located at 801 East Madrid in Las Cruces.

The town of Bayard held a special meeting November 20, 2023. Attendance included Mayor Chon Fierro, councilors, Frances Gonzales, Eloy Gonzales, Jose Diaz, and Eloy Medina. Gabriel Ramos, city clerk, also attended.
The special meeting had been called to discuss the ICIP (Infrastructure capital improvement plan). Senator Siah Correa Hemphill and Representative Luis Terrazas (phone) attended to participate in the discussion. They do the plan yearly and present it to the legislature for possible funding.
Intoxicated driver arrested

Silver City Police Department officers responded to a motor vehicle accident on Hudson Street near the intersection of 6th Street on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at about 12:38 a.m. According to an SCPD accident report, officers located a silver 2003 Toyota with heavy front-end damage.
The driver of the vehicle, Charles Moran, 66, Silver City, struck a posted sign in the median, damaging the sign. Moran stated he was coming from Little Toad Brewery and had been there a long time, and officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Moran's person. The report stated Moran refused to perform standard field sobriety tests.
