Sen. Siah Correa Hemphill called the Beat to say that she had finally gotten some information from the New Mexico Department of Transportation on the future improvements to U.S. Highway 180.
She said the NMDOT expects to go out to bid in October, with potential construction beginning in January 2024.
"This is for Phase 1 and Phase 2 only," Hemphill said. "It covers the area between Bayard to just outside Hurley by the railroad tracks. It is expected to take about a year, because of the complexities with rights-of-way and land ownership. The department said this would be the most complex part of the project. Phase 3 will take place at a later date likely several years out, and will go to the Luna County line."
UPDATED: Red Flag Warning 051023
RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FOR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FOR SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO... .The region continues in an extended period of warm and dry conditions, as deep southwest flow delivers breezy afternoons. As such, fuels are continuing to dry. On Wednesday a Pacific low will eject across the Four Corners Region, tightening pressure gradients and inducing surface troughing. This will increase wind speeds across the area on Wednesday. A windy afternoon and evening will elevate fire weather conditions to critical. The probability for new wildfire starts and large growth of any existing fires will be increased. Winds will decrease for the end of the week, but RH's will remain low. Relief is possible by Saturday as moisture looks to move in from the east to raise relative humditiy, and bring scattered rain showers.

More than 200 people attended the Grant County National Day of Prayer event at Gough Park on May 4 and united in prayer. Attendees were from many different congregations, along with many who do not have a church affiliation, united in prayer. More than 20 churches from various denominations and towns across Grant county supported the event.
The National Day of Prayer has a history that dates back to 1775, when the Continental Congress allocated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. Over the years, many called for a day of prayer, including President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. President Harry S. Truman established the first National Day of Prayer in 1952 through proclamation. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended the law, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer. Since then, every United States President has proclaimed the event.

On May 3, 2023, Aldo Leopold Charter School held the end of the semester showcase for the internships that some of the students participated in. The event took place at the school location on the Western New Mexico University campus in Ritch Hall located at 410 W. 10th Street.
Aldo Leopold started with the premise that many students learn best by doing and having direct experience. The school developed out of the community wanting to provide a choice to the area's students. The mission statement of the school, the human and natural environments, serve as a text and lab for learning through direct experience, inquiry, and stewardship.
Some of the students had done individual internships with different businesses in the area and had displays that explained the job, what they did, and what they learned.

The monthly Silver City-Grant County Chamber of Commerce held its monthly luncheon at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center on May 2, 2023.
The chamber joined up with District 39 Rep. Luis Terrazas to host him and representatives of the Workforce Connection Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act representatives out of Las Cruces to discuss programs to help businesses find employees and interns.
Terrazas said the agency shows how government "can actually help us. This is Small Business Week, so I'm trying to bring funding to small businesses and help them get young people into their workforce."
He noted that small businesses have struggled through the pandemic and now with inflation and higher prices. "We have low labor participation rates, so we want to try to connect people with jobs."
