In the John Wayne movie McClintock, Chill Wills fires off a gun and hollers :"People, People, People" so that everyone will listen to what John Wayne has to say about farming on the Mesa Verde. So if we were in a certain area and Chill Wills was still alive, I would ask him to pull that hogleg and get everyone's attention. I can envision him firing a shot into the air and calling out, "People. People, People. Gather round for this important message about Independence Day. Independence Day is always on July 4. It ain't on the Saturday before... and it shore ain't on the Saturday afterward. We celebrate Independence Day on July 4 and that's my final word on this matter." I couldn't have said it any better Mr. Wills... thank you.

The theme of this year's Independence Day Celebration is HEROES - Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. Our Grand Marshals will be veterans from World War II. Mr. Ray Davis with the American Legion has volunteered to contact all the World War II veterans to invite them to be in the parade as our Grand Marshals. The Grant County Republicans have volunteered to provide a float for the World War II veterans to ride on as the Grand Marshals. This will be a great way to honor these fine heroes.

So if you want to be in the parade, what must you do? Contact the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce office to receive a parade entry application form. Our phone number is 538-3785. The form has the parade rules and tells you how much the cost will be to enter the parade. The cost is determined by what type of entry you will have.

Besides the parade, we will also have our festivities in the park. There will be lots of food, music, vendors and information booths. So if your organization or business wants to have a booth in Gough Park on July 4, what must you do? Please contact the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce office at 538-3785 and ask for a Vendor Booth Application. It's that darn easy and it's pretty painless to boot. The booth spaces are starting to fill up, so if you want a space, you should contact us soon. Heck, this is June 21, and July 4th isn't very far off.

What about fireworks? Are we going to have fireworks on July 4th? ABSOLUTELY! We have to have fireworks. There has to be some type of old-west unwritten code that says a western town must have a fireworks show. Well, we are in the West and we believe in following the Code of the West. So we'll be shooting off those big beautiful exploding fireworks balls on Tuesday evening - July 4. It's going to be a great fireworks show brought to you by First American Bank and the Town of Silver City.

By the way we want to say Thank you to the newest member of the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce... Cactus Jacks. If you haven't visited Cactus Jacks, you need to. Cactus Jacks sells healthy delicious food. It's basically a small healthy grocery store. They also have a menu of food items you can order that are delicious. I recently had the "Dagwood" sandwich with BBQ potato chips. It was delicious.

Cactus Jacks is located at 1307 North Pope Street in Silver City. You can call them at 575-538-5042. Whether you are shopping for groceries to take home or you just want to pick up a light delicious meal... Cactus Jacks is a great place to visit.

So "People, People, People," plan to attend all the holiday fun of the 4th of July on July 4 in downtown Silver City, New Mexico.
