Celebrating Independence Day by honoring our heroes seems like a pretty neat idea. Think about it. Who is your hero?
It could be a teacher who gave you the inspiration to succeed in school and later at your employment. It could be a law enforcement officer who helped you during a time of great need. Your hero might be your pastor who has inspired you to lead a good and decent life. Shoot, there are some people who may call the publisher of the Silver City Daily Press a hero for saving Silver City's hometown newspaper. The possibilities of whether or not you have been a hero to someone might amaze you.
So on this July 4th, we say thank you and honor all the individuals of our community who step forward to make a difference in the lives of others.
There is one special group of heroes on whom we want to place a spotlight. We want to honor the World War II veterans of Grant County by making them the Grand Marshals of the Independence Day Parade. We have a float ready just for these Grant County citizens who survived World War II. If you are a World War II veteran, please call us at the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce office to tell us that you would like to be at the front of this year's parade next Tuesday morning. Our phone number is 538-3785. If you know a World War II Veteran, please invite them to ride on the Grand Marshals float with other World War II vets. All you have to do is let us know that you're coming, smile as you ride through downtown Silver City, and maybe wave a few times to all the people that are cheering for you... our World War II veterans.
I understand there will be a couple of groups handing out American flags during the parade. If you receive one of the free flags, please wave it high... please wave it proudly.
Here are a few activities that the Chamber of Commerce is helping to provide during this special holiday.
- Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and later in the day Kiwanis BBQ dinner at Gough Park
- The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel down Pope and Bullard Street. It will cross the Big Ditch on Broadway Street and then turn north on Hudson Street. The parade will end back around by Gough Park on 13th Street.
- Gough Park will be full of food vendors. You will be able to enjoy Mexican food dishes, BBQ, turkey legs, roasted corn on the cob, fried chicken, fresh Kettle Corn, delicious lemonade, lots of snacks, and even cold slices of watermelon throughout the day.
- There will be a booth selling raffle tickets. There will booths handing out information. There will be booths selling yard art, toys, hand-made items, and patriotic stuff. There will even be a booth showing off Karate videos and discussing ways to stay healthy and limber.
- Live music will be provided by the local band - Rock This Town.
- And yes, at dark we will enjoy the First American Bank/Town of Silver City Fireworks Show.
