I am aware of the history of daylight savings time. But I, like many others, feel that this is a program that needs to be canceled. Usually as it begins to get dark on Tuesday evening, I know I must finish writing my weekly article for the newspaper. But due to daylight savings time, I'm now running behind by an hour and the editor is wondering if I will get the article done or not. I was talking to a person earlier this week that told me he hasn't figured out how to change the clock in his car. He has to constantly remember whether the clock is one hour ahead or is it the right time. So he just ignores the clock in his vehicle. I know this is a trivial reason for wanting to do away with daylight savings time, but is there really a good reason to change the time twice a year. It certainly seems that the folks in Arizona and Hawaii are doing okay without changing their clocks twice a year… so why can't the other 48 states?

Speaking of time, it's time for the annual High Desert Gun Show. The show will be in the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business & Conference Center this coming Saturday and Sunday. It sounds like the facility will be full of vendors, so this should be a great show. Besides guns and ammo, I hear there will be other vendors with handmade jewelry and such… so this show will be great for the entire family. Make a date out of it. The guy can look for a new rifle or pistol, and the gal can look for a nice Taser or a set of earrings. The Conference Center is located at 3031 Highway 180 East in Silver City.

At the Chamber of Commerce, we are getting excited as we work on plans to hold a Silver City Wine Fest at the Conference Center later this summer. We hope to have several wineries from around New Mexico that will be on-hand to let you sample the best they have to offer. We will also plan to some of Grant County's best restaurants/caterers serving samples of their delicious delicacies, as you enjoy the fruit of the vine. We'll give you more information as it becomes available. A big thank you goes to David at La Esperanza Vineyard & Winery in the Mimbres Valley of Grant County for his assistance to make the event possible.

Later this week our Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will discuss possible big changes to our annual Murray Ryan Golf Tournament. The Chamber of Commerce will discuss combining our tournament with another local tournament to possibly create one large two-day event that will be beneficial to both organizations. For you duffers that like a challenge, we will keep you posted in future weeks.

Last week we enjoyed having over 400 people show up for the Lt. Governor's public meeting regarding the Air Force flights over the Gila National Forest. We heard lots of good comments from people who had never visited the Conference Center. They were impressed by the new facility and they were thankful that we had set up all the seats for such a large crowd. No matter which side of the argument people favored, almost everyone I spoke with agreed that the Air Force had done a poor job of bringing Grant County residents to the conversation. The meeting that was held should have taken place a long time and should have been sponsored by U.S. Air Force. It will be interesting to see if the Air Force comes back in the future to hold an official public meeting to receive local comments and recommendations. Last week's guest speaker stated he would make the recommendation that the Air Force should hold another public meeting giving everyone plenty of notice of any new opportunity to make comments on the record. We'll see.

Do you wonder what the Chamber of Commerce does on a day-to-day basis? Well, stop by our office sometime and I will enjoy visiting with you regarding this question. I won't give you a cup of coffee, but I'll get you a bottle of cold water while you visit with me. In the meantime, you can always call us with your questions or comments. Our phone number is (575) 538-3785. If you want to visit in person, our office is open Monday through Friday… 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or anytime we have an event booked in the conference center in the evenings and on weekends.
