Many of us paused yesterday in remembrance of the tragedies of 9/11, and we also celebrated the acts of heroism and bravery by our first responders, courageous volunteers and even some of the passengers of those four planes. The unselfish acts of people concerned to help their fellow man in time of need was incredible. As President Bush later stated during a memorial ceremony at the Pentagon, “One of the worst days in America’s history saw some of the bravest acts in America’s history. We’ll always honor the heroes of 9/11.”

9/11 was a day when many ordinary people did extraordinary things. And for many of those people and their families… their lives would be changed forever.

After the shock of the terrible events began to dissipate, across our great country people began flying the American flag and pride in America took center stage. We weren’t a nation of hyphenated names… we were simply a nation of Americans. Though there were still political differences, we were yet one country filled with determination and pride.

As we continue to remember 9/11, let us also remember the passion… the pride… the patriotism we had for our country. Those days weren’t better days; they were trying days. Those were days when the men and women of our country were ready to take on the challenge of hardship and battle for a better tomorrow for these United States.

So, what has happened to our country? Why do we now fight so fiercely among ourselves? How can we now proclaim that the enemy is actually fellow Americans who simply have a different viewpoint? Where has our pride and our patriotism gone? And let’s be clear… this began long before President Trump became President of our wonderful country… so you can’t just blame our President.

Patriot Day is a special day. However, we need to remember the passion for American patriotism each day of the year. We must find ways to heal the problems of today so that we may not only envision a brighter future for America… but build a better life in this great country that we live in.

In closing, may God bless those brave souls who have gone on before us, and may God bless our individual futures and the future of America. On behalf of the members of the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce… it is our pledge that we shall never forget!
