The new interactive, electronic Grant County Map is now available on the homepage of the Silver City Grant County website… www.silvercity.org. You can even download the map as a pdf file, then print it for yourself. You will see the names of advertising sponsors on the left-hand side of the map. Click on a business name and you will immediately be shown where the business is on the Grant County map. We hope to have the paper maps in our Chamber of Commerce office within the next week.

Just as I started writing this column, I received an interesting email. “I am inquiring about stock certificate my husband found after the recent passing of his mother she was 96 years old. It is a stock certificate that was purchased July 12, 1919 from Playas Basin Petroleum Company in Silver City, New Mexico. Not sure if it is worth anything any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.” It really is amazing some of the inquiries we receive in our office. The lady that sent this is probably correct. The stock certificate may be worth nothing… however it is very nostalgic. Most people do not think of this being a petroleum area. However there once was a company named Playas Basin Petroleum based in Silver City. If you know anything about this company or have any information I can share with the person who wrote the message, please contact me at the Chamber of Commerce office.

If you need a place to hold an event, call our office about space in the Grant County Conference Center. There’s plenty of parking and there are still some available dates for holiday parties. Our number is 538-3785.
