The 2019 Tour of the Gila started this week. This is a premier showcase event for southwest New Mexico. I understand the amateur field grew by about 20% this year, when some of the other races around the country are seeing declines. I believe this is a great testament to the marketing and organization that makes Tour of the Gila successful each year. If you want to know the racing schedule, visit the Tour of the Gila website at https://tourofthegila.com/. Good luck to the racers that are participating… and thank you to the racing officials, organizers, sponsors and of course the many volunteers that do a great job.

Officials with Grant County are hosting a County Visioning Session on May 7 at the Grant County Conference Center. The meeting will begin at 6:00 pm. So, what does the County hope to hear? They want to hear your ideas of what they can do to reuse or repurpose the old Grant County Detention Center behind the Courthouse at the corner of Cooper and Broadway Streets in downtown Silver City. No ideas are crazy, so come to the meeting on May 7 and share your thoughts about what should be done with this building.

HMS began seeing patients at their new temporary medical center on May 1 in the mining district next door to the Santa Clara Senior Citizens Center. A permanent structure will be erected soon. This is a great asset for Santa Clara.

Beginning next week, one of our members will have new hours. Tapas Tree Grill, an excellent restaurant located at 619 North Bullard Street in downtown Silver City will have the following hours:
Sunday: Closed
Monday: Closed
Tuesday: 11am - 3pm
Wednesday: 11am - 3pm
Thursday: 11am - 7pm (new extended hours for dinner)
Friday: 11am - 7pm (new extended hours for dinner)
Saturday: 11am - 4pm

Great food, great service, great prices… pay them a visit the next time you get hungry.

You may want to add this event to your calendar. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Mainstreet Plaza public bathrooms on Thursday – May 16 beginning at 3:00 pm. Funding for the new toilets at Mainstreet Plaza came from a Freeport-McMoRan grant. It will be interesting to see if they cut a regular ribbon or maybe some unrolled toilet paper. This is great for the downtown area and vicinity of the Farmers Market location.

We hope you have a great week. If you have questions or need information, call the Chamber of Commerce office at (575) 538-3785.
