Ah… Memorial Day Weekend. For many this is the beginning of the summer season, though the temperatures are still a bit cool. Some folks get that extra day off for the holiday. We hope you enjoy this holiday weekend.

Memorial Day weekend brings the Silver City Blues Festival to downtown Silver City. If you are visiting the Silver City area or you a local resident, we hope you have a great time at the 2019 Blues Festival. The Mimbres Region Arts Council has lined up some great entertainment for you to enjoy… and you can’t beat the price. There is no admission fee. So, enjoy the blues and the great outdoor venue here in Silver City.

Memorial Day is next Monday, May 27. There is always a wonderful Memorial Day event at Fort Bayard National Cemetery in Santa Clara. To get ready for the event, many volunteers are needed to help place flags beside each of the markers at the National Cemetery. If you are willing to help and have time, volunteers are asked to show up at Fort Bayard National Cemetery at 8:00 am this Friday morning. Please bring a hammer and some instrument to make a hole for the flags to be placed in the ground. Then they will need volunteers next Tuesday – May 28, to pick up all the flags. To me, the two most beautiful times to visit the cemetery is when the flags are posted by each grave and again at Christmas when wreaths are laid throughout the cemetery. If you have time, please come help honor our fallen heroes.

The Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year, and that is the day we will celebrate Independence Day. This year’s theme is “Made in the USA – built to last!”

On a personal note… due to health issues, there were no articles the past two weeks. I want to say thank you to the staff at Gila Regional Medical Center for taking care of me. Each of you did a great job and I am very appreciative of the care you gave me.
