It has been an exciting road, but all good things must eventually come to an end and after eight years I am off to seek new challenges and opportunities.

So the search for a new Director / Manager of the Gospel Mission has begun and if you or someone you know might be interested, the ad is as follows:

The Silver City Gospel Mission is searching for a new Executive Director / Manager.

This person will be responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Mission, including the soup kitchen, thrift store, food pantry, clothing bank and will report directly to the Mission Board.

To be considered, please mail a resume and cover letter to:

Silver City Gospel Mission
PO Box 5198
Silver City, NM 88062

postmarked no later than July 9th.

Start day will be Monday July 16 and there will be a 2 week probationary training period.

Management experience and a loving Christian attitude required and pay will be based upon experience.

So please pray for and wish us luck in our search and I'll see everyone around.

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve.

Once again, we will have a float and info table this year in the 4th of July Parade and Park. If you would like to give us a hand in construction, riding on it or sitting at the table, please drop me a line. Everyone who wants to participate is more than welcome!

Last year, our Vacation Bible School for the kids of the area went very well and we were thinking about trying it again this year in August. If you would like to be in charge or help out with a VBS, please let us know.

A gentle reminder that our thrift store is open to the general public every Monday - Friday between 8:30 am and 1:30 pm.

And if you have never shopped in a thrift store, here are a few reasons you may not have considered:

1. Nothing is going to shrink after you buy it because it has already been laundered (unless it is brand new and we have some of that also)
The variety of colors we have available
If you love purses you can buy a new one every time you come in (at $2 bucks a pop, who can lose?)
Unique kitchen utensils and items (seems like we always have a few and sometimes we have no idea what they are used for).
If you love reading you can always find a unique book or 3 for those long nights
And if you are heavily into crafts you can find unique items you can use for your hobby.
If you are considering donating some items, we are short on mini shampoos for hygiene kits, shoes, men's small size jeans, socks, underwear, and pots and pans.

The reason for the small sized men's jeans is that sometimes these guys don't get very much to eat and are skinnier than the normal population and even though their leg length might be 30″ or more, their waist size is under 30″ a lot of times.

Verse Of The Week:
“I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine.”

A huge thanks to the United Church of Christ who came in and prepared a meal this last Friday. The students from Calvary Christian Academy are taking the summer off from cooking, so if your group would like to come in and help us on a Friday or a Sunday your help would be greatly appreciated.

For those who have asked, we had a young mother and her child who were living on the streets and wouldn't accept any help from anyone due to her pride. She was very nice and I admire her standards, but we did finally convince her to accept some help and we were able to get her back together with some relatives. Last we heard she is doing great and wishes to thank the entire Silver City community for their big hearts and love they showed.

Thank you guys-this really is a pretty good place to live

We spend a lot of time and resources at the Mission in our fight against hunger, cold and despair.

We are trying different ways of feeding, clothing, inspiring and educating those who come to the Mission in search of the emergency services we provide and trying to find ways to help them get back on their feet and stay there.

I was asked the other day how an individual could help improve the lives of the impoverished in our small town and have thought of a few ways that could make an impact on someone.

Educate Yourself; research the causes of poverty and find out how in many cases it is linked to addictions, lack of education, mental illness or the criminal justice system and think of ways you can get involved in solutions to the major issues that we are putting a band-aid on.

Help an individual that you know needs your help; direct them to the Mission, give them some food or needed items, offer them a simple job for cash, or even just talk to them and learn their story.

Become an advocate for a good cause; do you see roadblocks in society that are preventing effective change from happening? Then try and do something about it by starting a petition, talking to your elected officials, getting your neighbors together for a discussion and educating yourself on current bills or laws.

Start your own fundraiser or food drive; See a need that isn't being met or want to lend a direct hand to an individual, family or organization? Start your own food drive or fundraiser.
Pray for those in need; I left this for last in fear that I might lose some readers, but it should have been first. I am a firm believer in God and I do believe that if your are willing to ask/seek/knock you will be answered if you keep your eyes open.

And if you don't have the time, inclination or resources to directly help those in need you can always drop by the Mission or one of the many other fine non-profits in our area and take a tour to see what is happening and donate some of your cash, goods or ideas (or if you have the time, we always have a need for volunteers!)

“There is no Them. There are only facets of Us.”
