Deming, NM – December 5, 2017 – Situated on the Mexican border, Luna County N.M. has seen a lot of history tramp, stride, ride and roll over its boundaries. It is part of the ancestral home land of the Fort Sill Apaches, an entry gate to North America for the Conquistadors, a staging ground for attack by the Mexican revolutionary Poncho Villa and a major staging area for the entry of the Mexican labor force that fed the United States during WWII.
Local historian Raymond Cobos was raised in Hachita, NM. As an eleven-year-old he was hired by the farmer next door to translate for the Spanish speaking Braceros (field workers). During World War II the Braceros Program brought millions of Mexican workers to the United States to fill the need for labor resulting from the war effort. The program continued until the 1960s. Cobos went on to a career in law enforcement, retiring as Sheriff of Luna County.
Please view the flyers below for information about upcoming events at the Deming-Luna-Mimbres Museum.
