Have you ever compromised in order to get some of what you wanted rather than nothing? Yes you have. You have probably supported political compromises from your favorite elected officials for the same reason. Yet, when it comes to the history of America, the left doesn't seem to understand the compromises that were made in order to create this nation.

Nike listened to its 'expert' on social issues, Colin Kaepernick, and pulled a shoe bearing the "Betsy Ross Flag" from distribution because CK said it offended him. Not only that, it offended all blacks because that flag, like the Confederate battle flag, represented slavery. I did not know that, and I went to school at a time when they actually taught some U.S. history.

He is wrong, of course, because the flag was created to not only represent the original 13 colonies, but the ideals as expressed in our founding documents; freedom, liberty, opportunity equality, and self-determination to name a few. The flag was used as a reminder to those in battle of what they were fighting for and rallied Patriots to continue to fight when things were not going well.

Our founders were very aware of the apparent hypocrisy of saying all men are created equal while allowing men to own slaves; but they knew they could not achieve the greater goals of establishing independence with all of the aforementioned freedoms without some compromise. So they compromised.

But they put into place the framework that would allow these ills to be corrected in the future. We fought a war to end slavery; we granted women the right to vote and to own property; we changed the things we did not like about this country. In other words, we redeemed ourselves and became a better nation because of the ability to change our laws.

Kaepernick and others also ignore that even though the law permitted things like slavery or limited rights for women, there were still free black men who were quite successful in America. In fact, there were blacks that owned slaves. Women succeeded in fields where they were not traditionally found. Betsy Ross and many like here were strong independent women who forged their own futures even though the law limited them in many ways.

This country has been a force for good, despite our flaws. We have liberated many oppressed nations; fought wars to stop tyranny and genocide; been the first country to respond to terrible disasters abroad; heck, we even rebuilt nations with whom we'd been at war and let them govern themselves. There is not a country in the history of the world that has done more good for mankind in general than these United States of America.

Yes, we had to compromise along the way but we didn't let that stop us from continuing to push forward and try to make ourselves better. But the left, while they probably know the truth, will never acknowledge our redemption because that does not strike the strong, negative emotional chords that they base their power structure upon.
