According to Copper Country Senior Olympics of Grant County Coordinator Mario Quintana, several locals have qualified for state competitions in Albuquerque between July 19-25. He did not know which ones would be attending.

In track, Lorenzo Anaya and Maria Elena Galindo of Silver City and John Lacey of Mimbres qualified.

In archery, Gene Bates of Mimbres, Michael Dowell of Santa Clara, Jimmy Head of Mimbres, and Frank Kenney of Silver City qualified.

Fidel Quintana of Silver City qualified for horseshoes; Chris Trujillo of Silver City for golf; and Michele Valencia of Silver City for badminton.

In addition, the Grant County Boomers softball team qualified for state.

Mario Quintana said the founder of Senior Olympics in New Mexico, Ernesto Ramos of Santa Fe died last Friday, June 16, 2017.

Quintana also said the Copper Country Senior Olympics Banquet will take place Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, with more details to come.
