Martha Placencio has 39 years experience as a Medical Assistant (MA) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with the past 5 years serving patients at Gila Regional Medical Center's (GRMC) Cancer Center.

"When I heard that GRMC had posted the position I jumped at it," said Mrs. Placencio. "I stayed at GRMC to ensure patient continuity. The patients at the cancer center become like family, I could not leave them."

Born and raised in Silver City, Martha has family and has been here all her life. Her family has a history of being musicians since before she was born. While they have gone by many band names over the years, most recently they are known as Latin Image.

"I love to sing to my patients," added Martha. "They make requests for comforting songs when they come for care."

Having had experience with other university based hospitals in Arizona, Mrs. Placencio sees the transition to the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center as a positive change.

"Change is good," stated Martha when asked what she thought about the transition. "I personally think everything will be alright in the end."

The contract with UNM was signed on Monday, July 17, 2017 and three oncologists are in the process of being credentialed to cover patient care once a week at the Cancer Center. This is only temporary until a full time oncologist can be put in place to cover services Monday through Friday.

"Martha is a wonderful caregiver and truly loves her patients" said Taffy Arias, Chief Executive Officer at GRMC. "We are honored to have her."
