Two area high school graduates will receive $500 scholarships from the Grant County Association of Education Retirees. There was a tie between the top two applicants, so the members voted to give each of them identical scholarships. These scholarships are being given this year in memory of Murray Ryan who was a great friend of education.

h40 2Hayleigh DrozdaHayleigh Drozda, Valedictorian of the Cliff High School 2017 graduating class, plans to attend the University of New Mexico to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science. Hayleigh has maintained a straight A average, while participating in a full range of co-curricular and community activities. Hayleigh is the daughter of Fawn Heidrick of Las Cruces.

rebekah mccartyRebekah McCartyRebekah McCarty was number one of her Reserve High School class of 2017, with a four point-grade average. Rebekah’s plan is to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Extension Service Education from New Mexico State University. She has engaged in an impressive list of school and community activities and also managed to have a part-time job and earn nine hours of dual credits from Western New Mexico University. Rebekah is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy McCarty of Reserve.

GCAER President, Jewell Burke, commented, “With young leaders like these, the future of our country is in good hands.”

GCAER is an affiliate of the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees, an organization of members of the New Mexico Educational Retirement system. While representing retired education employees, NMAER also supports Public Schools. For example, GCAER delivered bags of candies to the Faculty Lounges of all the public schools in Grant County during Teacher Appreciation Week. GCAER welcomes all Retirees, who receive ERA benefits.
