Silver City, NM – Guadalupe Montessori School (GMS) is pleased to announce that it recently received a $7,000 grant from United Way of Southern New Mexico to enhance its capacity to help children "STEAM" ahead. Funding will be used for scholarships, staff professional development, parent education, and classroom materials that support "STEAM" education. STEAM education uses the current model of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus, with the important addition of the Arts and Humanities.

The STEAM concept acknowledges the importance of art, culture, and creative thinking within all subject areas, as the means to develop well rounded skills and abilities. "These programs will enhance our capacity to foster children's critical thinking and creative problem solving abilities," said Egnal.

Critical thinking, creative problem solving, and scientific literacy are life skills GMS strives to impart through the education modules offered in the classrooms. Funding from United Way will enable GMS to provide more financial aid and scholarships to support underserved families and increase student enrollment and diversity. Funding will also support more robust professional development and strengthen the school's dual language program, in which younger children learn both English and Spanish.

"This funding will help us to serve more children with a high-quality, authentic Montessori education that prepares them for today's dynamic and changing world," said board president Goyce Wolfe. "This work strongly aligns with our goal of making a Montessori education available to all children and families who desire it."
