Silver City, NM — More than 25 students showed up for the Bike Rodeo at Stout Elementary on March 29th. The event was sponsored by Bikeworks and Healthy Kids Healthy Communities Grant County (HKHC) and funded by a United Way grant awarded to Bikeworks for outreach and after school cycling. Volunteers set up a safety practice course in the Stout courtyard. Designed to help youth practice safe riding skills, the course included areas that required yielding, stopping, sharing the road, surface transition and riding on gravel. The course also included a trick ramp for "getting air". Bikeworks brought several of their unusual bikes, bikes for kids that don't have one and a portable bike repair shop. Helmets were checked for fit and safety and April Teague, the Grant County ICAN Educator brought lots of healthy snacks which were much appreciated by the kids who rode non-stop around the course for nearly two hours!

Starting on Thursday, April 5th, Stout students will be able to participate in an after school group ride with Dave Baker from Bikeworks and other adult chaperones. Ride will start at 3:15 and last about an hour. For more information on the after school ride call Alicia Edwards at 575-313-3371 or alicia@hkhcgrantcounty.org. If your Stout student would like to participate but doesn't have a bike, Bikeworks offers an Earn-A-Bike program. Call Dave Baker for more information at 575-590-1468 or bikebaker@yahoo.com.
