The local Daughters of the American Revolution Jacob Bennett Chapter recently held their annual meeting that was attended by State Regent, Georgie McDougle. The local chapter of the DAR meets the second Saturday of the month at the Silver City Visitor Center located at 201 North Hudson Street at 10:00 a.m. in September through May. Visiting DAR members and potential new members are welcome to attend the meetings. For additional information about the national organization and the membership requirements, please visit www.dar.org or contact the local Chapter Regent, Lucy Whitmarsh at 57-574-8394 or whitmarshlucy@gmail.com.

The local chapter of the DAR was organized in 1903 and named for an ancestor of six of the eighteen founding members of the chapter. Jacob Bennett was from New York and served as a Private in the Army during the entire Revolutionary War from 1775 until 1783. To be eligible for membership in the DAR your ancestor does not have to been in the military but may have contributed in other ways to the war effort.

The members are interested in historic preservation, education and patriotism. Locally the members devote many volunteer hours to projects associated with their interests. A project that the local chapter would like to work on is restoration of a monument that identifies a portion of the Butterfield Stage Route that was placed on Highway 180 at mile marker 144.7, a short distance south of the rest stop in Luna County. The monument was originally installed by the Deming Chapter of the DAR but that organization has disbanded. Anyone interested in contributing funds to the Monument Restoration Project can send a check to: Jacob Bennett Chapter DAR PO Box 5046, Silver City, NM 88062
