boston hill rsSilver City, NM – Tuesday, Silver City public works crews began installing trail signs at key intersections to alert visitors about the many hiking and walking trails available in and around Silver City.

open space rscheyenne trailhead rsFunded by a grant to the Town from the US Department of Transportation's Recreational Trails Program, the project was conceived and managed by Southwest New Mexico Arts, Culture & Tourism, working closely with local and CDT trail advocates, the NM Department of Transportation and the US Forest Service.

In addition to the Town signs, the NM DOT has installed signs on highways 180 and 90 pointing to Gomez Peak, CDT, Boston Hill and the Dragonfly trails.

The trail map kiosk that was recently installed in front of the Visitor Center was a part of this grant, as was the printing of 20,000 map brochures that are available at the Visitor Center and in brochure racks around the area.

Colleen Morton, Executive Director of the SCACD said, "This has been a rewarding project as it has allowed us to see concrete improvements to Silver City's trail system and has made the town even more attractive to visitors. Many individuals and groups have been involved in the design, approval and installation of the kiosk and signs and we greatly appreciate all their support. We could not have completed this project without their help."

Lee Gruber, Chairman of the SCACD Board said, ""It is so rewarding to see a worthwhile project come to a successful conclusion and I thank the Town of Silver City and the Silver City Arts & Cultural District for their steadfast efforts and support. Our local trails are representative of a body of wealth in out of doors activities that our community harbors and must continue to support and expand upon. Bravo to all involved in bringing this project to fruition."
