Silver City MainStreet received a grant from the New Mexico Resiliency Alliance for a beautification project in downtown Silver City. The funds were used to completely rehab a block of Broadway Street between Arizona and Pinos Altos Streets and across from the Silver City Museum.

This project is a good example of a public/private collaboration and bringing resources together to transform the block of Broadway Street. The project area is the Town of Silver City owned area between the street and sidewalk. This area had exposed landscape fabric, dirt, and random rocks along with a totally overgrown area next to a bench that couldn’t be used due to the overgrowth. Wendy and David Phillips, the private property owners, contributed additional funding for the project. The project included the construction of a rock wall to retain soil and plants, and landscaping with rock and plants. The landscape design work for the project was provided to Silver City MainStreet through NM MainStreet’s revitalization specialist, Amy Bell of Groundwork Studio.

The area is now very attractive and usable with the corner of Broadway and Pinos Altos Streets a pleasant sitting area. Silver City MainStreet is also planting the planters with native plants funded by the Town and Country Garden Club with help from Aldo Leopold students.

This project is also a very good example of a private/public partnership”.

The Silver City MainStreet Project is one of the oldest and most successful MainStreet programs in the state. The MainStreet program is a national program fostering economic development in local communities and operates under the NM MainStreet program and the state Economic Development Department.
