Melody HarwoodSilver High School is proud to announce that one of Silver High's students will be attending the summer program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is an extremely high honor for student, Melody Harwood.

Melody Harwood's response to the award:

MITES stands for Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science. The program was created to give minorities and students from underserved communities the opportunity to study at MIT, ranked the top research university in the world. The program is highly selective - MITES selects 80 high school juniors for their program, and I was selected from a pool of over 2,300 applicants - an acceptance rate of 3.5%.

I’ll get to live at MIT and take classes in Calculus, Physics, Humanities, Chemistry, and other electives, for six weeks, for free. The only cost for me is travel expenses to and from MIT.

The 33-page application included five short-answer essay questions. In my essays I wrote about many different things: New Mexico’s attitude towards education and its impact on my self-motivation, becoming a black belt, my career goal in astrophysics, my deep-rooted interest in math and physics, and my dream of finding cleaner energy sources.

The program is from June 22 to August 2, 2019, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Although my ACT and GPA don't quite align with MIT's averages, I believe my motivation and passion for education were reflected in my extracurricular activities and essays.

I’m super proud that I’ve been awarded this opportunity, and thankful for those who helped me through the process.
