Santa Fe, NM – Today, Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas (D-Albuquerque) presented at a policy roundtable on New Mexico’s passage of the Criminal Record Expungement Act at the Criminal Justice Legislative Convening in Nashville, Tennessee. The convening was hosted by the Coalition for Public Safety, a bipartisan coalition of American advocacy groups that works to address some of the nation’s most pressing criminal justice reform issues. Rep. Maestas was invited to speak as a national stakeholder because of his ongoing commitment to criminal justice reform.

“People with a criminal history face permanent barriers to employment, housing, education, and other quality of life opportunities,” said Antonio “Moe” Maestas. “I am proud to have sponsored this important legislation to give hundreds of thousands of New Mexicans a second chance to reintegrate into society and contribute to our state’s labor force. The more we can do to learn from one another across state lines – our successes, our challenges, and our experiences – the more educated we will be as policy makers.”

New Mexico has become the 50th state in our nation to have an expungement law. Expungement will not be granted to a person who was convicted of homicide, an offense against a child, an offense that caused great bodily harm, a sex offense, a DWI, or embezzlement.
