CLAY Festival Tour: Mimbres Culture Heritage Site
Wednesday, July 26, 2017, 08:15am - 11:00am |
25 participant maximum; $10. Tour a site that contains prehistoric ruins of the Mimbres Culture dating back to 400 AD. Marilyn Markel, Grant County Archaeological Society, will present a power point history talk and take participants on the Mattocks Ruin trail walk. The Mattocks Ruin is a large pit-house and pueblo village: approximately 1000 years ago, a Mimbres pueblo was built at this site on top of an earlier pit-house village. Also on site are two territorial adobe houses dating from 1882 (Dr. Granville Wood home) and 1895 ( Benjamin Gooch house) built during the homestead years. Learn about the history of the Mimbres Valley and its inhabitants over the centuries through the investigation of these structures and sites. The trail has easy access. Please meet at 8:15am to sign waivers. Drive to the site is a half hour; cars will leave at 8:30am and carpooling is encouraged. Bring water, sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes.
