You may be aware of the Town of Silver City's Proclamation establishing the "Core Values of the Town of Silver City" back in 2003.

In April 2017, the old Proclamation included a sub-title, "Reaffirmation and Celebration of the Core Values of the Town of Silver City."

The Proclamation states that "the Town's Territorial Charter of 1878 provides for the regulation of persons and property for the health, welfare, and safety of the Town, its inhabitants, and visitors, and the Town Council notes that there exists no express or implied power in said Territorial Charter authorizing this government to regulate, detain, or otherwise participate in matters involving possible undocumented persons..." It goes on to declare that they will not utilize their limited resources for searching, surveilling, seizing or detaining possible undocumented persons who have not committed a crime...and, continue their policy of refraining from making any inquiries into the status of citizenship and, most importantly they will not join or provide resources to any task force or other assemblage of law enforcement created or act with a purpose of enforcing federal immigration law.

It may be very possible that our town Charter, the only territorial Charter in New Mexico, may allow this. It behooves us to understand the potential ramifications of what the Town Council and mayor have re-affirmed.

Sanctuary cities and counties will be one of several topics that Zach Taylor will first of all address in a short presentation, and then open up to all for a Q & A session. Everyone is invited!

Light supper (sandwiches and finger food) will be offered in the Mall through the double doors as you exit the Library afterwards.
