SILVER CITY: The Silver City Museum announces a reception for the new exhibition 50 Years Ago in Silver City, opening May 19, 2017 as part of a year of activities and events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Silver City museum. The museum invites the public and community members of all ages to join in a celebration of the opening, on May 19th, with a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. featuring popular refreshments from a past era. There will be a costume contest; dressing in circa 1967 attire encouraged.

The exhibition 50 Years Ago in Silver City will immerse the visitor in the era of the Museum's founding. 50 Years Ago tells the story of the Museum, placing it in the context of life in Silver City and Grant County circa 1962-1976. Artifacts and photographs of the era from the Silver City Museum's collection and on loan from community members will be on display.

50 Years Ago in Silver City features popular culture artifacts and photographs, showcasing the music, clothing, sports, and cars of the era. The exhibition also presents newsworthy local happenings in education, civil rights, mining, rodeo, and space exploration.

Vignettes comprising artifacts collected in 1967 will be displayed in the Museum hallway cases to give visitors a sense of the Museum collection in those early days.

This exhibition and its supporting community programs are made possible by the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
