November 13, 2017. SILVER CITY, NM. The Guadalupe Montessori School (GMS) will host the Festival of Trees for its 5th holiday season! This year’s festival will occupy the old Curious Kumquat building (111 E. College Ave.), in the heart of downtown Silver City from December 8-17. This community event is a fundraiser for the Guadalupe Montessori School, with proceeds supporting all aspects of the school’s operation, including tuition assistance and historic facilities preservation. The Festival of Trees has a rich and storied history in our town, having been produced in the past by Penny Park and the LDS Church. GMS is proud to carry forth the tradition of this beloved Silver City event.
The Festival of Trees is a celebration of the holiday season and the wonder of individual expression and creativity. Local artists, individuals, and organizations will decorate live Christmas trees and agave stalks, and all community members will have a chance to purchase the decorated and undecorated trees, as well as seasonal plants, high quality gifts made by local artisans, and homemade holiday baked goods. The diverse crew of decorators makes for a breathtaking presentation of trees, from traditional to whimsical.
The 2017 Guadalupe Montessori School Festival of Trees will have its Grand Opening Friday, December 8 from 12 noon-8pm. Additional hours are: Saturday, December 9 from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm and Sunday, December 10 from 11:00 am- 5 pm. The Festival will continue the following weekend with the same weekend hours, but also opening Thursday, December 14 from 5-9pm, in collaboration with the Silver City Museum’s Victorian Christmas event. There will be free rides between the two events on the Holiday Inn Express vintage fire truck, and Raul Turrieta's electric golf cart. Free hot cider and popcorn will be offered to the public at the Festival of Trees on the night of the Victorian Christmas.
The Guadalupe Montessori School (GMS) was founded in 1979 by Kathy and Phil Dahl-Bredine, and provides accessible, high quality Montessori education for children in Grant County. The program has grown to include children from 18 months to 12 years old. GMS strives to serve children from diverse backgrounds, maintaining a strong commitment to educational excellence, cultural and economic diversity, and affordable tuition.
