slaid cleaves rsSlaid CleavesSILVER CITY, NM – The Mimbres Region Arts Council, in conjunction with premier sponsor Cissy McAndrew/United County Mimbres Realty and lodging sponsor Holiday Inn Express, announces the first Indie/Folk concert in 2018. The Austin-by-way-of-Maine artist Slaid Cleaves takes the stage Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 pm at the Buckhorn Opera House, in the scenic mountain town of Pinos Altos - just a 10-minute drive from Silver City. The MRAC Indie/Folk Series showcases unique and emerging talent that reflects the ever-expanding boundaries of the "Folk" genre.

Described as "terse, clear and heartfelt" (NPR Fresh Air), Cleaves' songs speak to timeless truths. "… you don't need to learn the language of song. We seem to be born with it," Cleaves explains. "With no preparation at all, they can bring you to tears in a matter of seconds. I remember being three or four and getting a lump in my throat when I heard Hank Williams sing."

Ghost on the Car Radio, which was released in June 2017, is Cleaves' first release since 2013. The New York Daily News called his music "a treasure hidden in plain sight," while the Austin Chronicle declared, "there are few contemporaries that compare. He's become a master craftsman on the order of Guy Clark and John Prine."

The characters in Slaid Cleaves' songs live in unglamorous reality. They work dead-end jobs, they run out of money, they grow old, they hold on to each other (or not), and they die. With an eye for the beauty in everyday life, he tells their stories, bringing a bit of empathy to their uncaring world.

Don't miss out on the chance to hear Slaid Cleaves at the historic and intimate Buckhorn Opera House. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the performance begins at 7:30 pm.
