The Silver City Public Library is excited to welcome Santa Fe Opera teaching artist Charles Gamble back to Silver City to lead theater workshops for a variety of age groups. Workshops for children and teens will be held on Thursday, June 7, and a workshop for adults will be held Friday, June 8. There is a limit of 15 participants for the children and teen workshops, and 20 participants for the adult workshop. There will be no pre-registration for the workshops; instead, free tickets will be given out starting 30 minutes prior to the beginning of each event.

Children ages 6 to 12 can participate in "The Agile Improvised Odyssey" workshop on Thursday, June 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In two hours the group will create and stage an original story following the Hero's Journey, a pattern that many myths, folktales, and even movies follow. Our hero leaves home on a quest for something that is missing, meeting new friends and encountering dramatic obstacles and fierce adversaries on the way. Before returning home, our hero is dramatically transformed. In the last 30 minutes of the workshop, families can return to watch the story that kids bring to life in a whirlwind world premiere, complete with simple make-up and costumes.

From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 teens ages 12-18 are invited to participate in the "Improv for Discovery" workshop. What's the first step in telling a story together? High-end listening! This two-hour workshop will focus on techniques from theatrical improvisation and movement and nurture students' innate curiosity, creativity, and ability to make connections with others. No previous acting experience is necessary in this fun and supportive session. Please wear clothes that are comfortable to move in.

The Introduction to Larval Masks workshop for adults will be held Friday, June 8, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Larval masks originated in the 1960s in Basel, Switzerland and were used by Gamble's theater teacher in France to help actors simplify and amplify their choices. The masks are large, and purposefully without much detail. The workshop will include an introduction to the masks and progress to actors using masks in simple, non-speaking improvisations.

Facilitator Charles Gamble is a teaching artist with the Santa Fe Opera who trained in physical theater at L'Ecole Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, at the Roy Hart Institute for Voice in Malérargues, France, and at Shakespeare and Company in Lenox, Massachusetts. Charles teaches drama at New Mexico School for the Arts and manages the Active Learning Through Opera outreach program for the Santa Fe Opera.

Summer Reading Program activities for all ages are scheduled from June 5 through July 27. Registration to track reading and redeem prizes is open; family members of all ages can register through the duration of the program. Those interested in signing up can do so by visiting the library front desk, bringing their library card if they have one. There are summer reading activities and prize drawings for adults, too.

The library is located at 515 W. College Avenue in Silver City and is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. For more information visit silvercitypubliclibrary.org or contact the library at 575-538-3672 or ref@silvercitymail.com.
