Photo by Laurie FordJuly is time for one of Glenwood's unique annual events, the Doo Dah Parade on July 4th. It's like stepping back in time. The day's celebrations include: the Street Market, a horseshoe tournament, the parade, music and dancing and is topped off by fireworks.

fireworks1 rsFireworks top off the annual 4th of July celebration in Glenwood.fireworks2 rsThe Doo Dah Parade is an upbeat, old-fashioned fun event featuring outrageous costumes and unique drill teams and marching units like the Umbrella Bellas and Fellas and the Lawn Chair Brigade.

July 4th schedule
8 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Street Market (Hwy 180 mile marker 51)
3-6 p.m. - Horseshoe Tournament and Games at the Community Park (Catwalk Road. mile marker 1) Activities include: a dunk tank, sack race, egg toss, water balloons, and assorted games. Food, BBQ pork sandwich, potato salad and baked beans, is available for $5.
6 p.m. - Doo Dah Parade - Hwy 180
7 - 9 p.m. - Gila River Band, Community Park
9 p.m. - FIREWORKS

"Libraries Rock," the Summer Reading program continues every Wednesday in July from 1-3:30 p.m. at Glenwood Community Library. Kids attending are typically from toddler to 13. There are separate programs for pre-school and older kids. Every child will receive a book and bag. Snacks are provided. The program includes fun games, crafts, and prizes. There will be a drawing on the last day for Grand Prizes -- at least one for each age group. Kids earn entries for this through participation in the program throughout the summer. There is a sign-up sheet at the front desk in the library at 14 Menges Lane in downtown Glenwood. The program is organized by Kelly Hemmer.

July 13 is Movie Night at Glenwood Community Library. "Dare to Be Wild" is the feature film which stars Emma Greenwell in the true story of Irishwoman Mary Reynolds, an outsider who wins a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2002. Tom Hughes plays the young man who helps her on the journey and Alex Macqueen plays the Flower Show official who makes things difficult for her. Showtime is 7 p.m. at the library, 14 Menges Lane, Glenwood, New Mexico 88039.

July 14 is Second Saturday when the Catwalk Gallery will be serving cake and coffee in the morning and beverages and snacks in the afternoon.

Cosmic Campground Weekend is set for July 13-15. Bring a friend, red filtered flashlight, shade, lawn chair, and telescope and binoculars if you have them. Make new friends and enjoy the wonders of the night sky. For more information, go to cosmiccampground.org. The campground is located on Highway 180 about eight miles north of Alma, NM.

Every Saturday
The Glenwood Street Market, featuring arts and crafts, and food, is growing. New vendors are adding even more variety to the selections. It is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market will also be open on Wednesday July 4.

Mogollon is back in business after a year-long road closure due to a major construction project. The museum, the Old Kelly Store which features all sorts of hand-crafted items and art and the popular eatery, the Purple Onion, are now open. Check out this unique ghost town on weekends all summer long.
