buffalo soldiers rsSaturday evening, July 28, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Clara National Guard Armory for the screening of two excellent documentaries on the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, as America's African American soldiers were known on the frontier.

"For Love of Liberty", introduced by General Colin Powell will trace the evolution of the black regiments from the time of the Civil War through their service on the frontier. (This segment is part two of a four part series that covers the period from the American Revolution until the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.)

"The Buffalo Soldiers", will be the second feature, and is an excellent documentary from 1992. It features scenes recorded at Fort Bayard, and touches on such well known Fort Bayard personalities as Colonel Allensworth, and Medal of Honor winner Clinton Greaves. Several prominent historians are featured, and the documentary concludes with the stirring and memorable speech given by General Colin Powell at the dedication of the Fort Leavenworth Buffalo Soldiers Memorial in 1992.

The showings are free, and concessions will be available.
