The updated treehouse at the playground is popular with kids of all ages.The playground behind the Glenwood Library and Community Center has had a facelift thanks to volunteers and donations from the community. It saw plenty of activity during the Library's Summer Reading Program as kids took advantage of the expanded treehouse and new equipment. The treehouse was beautifully refurbished and expanded by Greg Koether and Jane Dellinger who also donated a sandbox to the facility. The Glenwood Community Center provided new equipment including a tetherball, hockey sticks and more, which got lots of use from older kids and teens. There are shady spots where grown-ups can sit and keep an eye as the children play and also enjoy the colorful murals and flowers in the garden. The film is "Kill the Messenger," a thriller based on a true story about journalist Gary Webb (played by Jeremy Renner), who gets a tip that leads him to a major story that endangers his life. He uncovers the CIA's past role in importing huge amounts of cocaine into the U.S. that was sold in ghettos across the country to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras' rebel army. Despite pressure not to, Webb pursues the story and with his evidence, published the series "Dark Alliance." Webb found himself defending his integrity, his family, and his life. Coming up in September at the library is a book signing by local author, Philip Connors, author of the popular "Fire Season." His new book, "A Song for the River" is a sequel about calamity and resilience in the world's first Wilderness. A dozen years into his dream job keeping watch over the Gila National Forest, Philip Connors bore witness to the blaze he had always feared: a megafire that forced him off his mountain by helicopter, and forever changed the forest and watershed he loved.
Meet him in person Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Glenwood Community Library.
August 11 is Second Saturday when the Catwalk Gallery will be serving cake and coffee in the morning and beverages and snacks in the afternoon. The gallery is located at 5112 Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood. It features a wide variety of work by New Mexico artists and artisans.
Cosmic Campground Weekend is set for Aug 10-12. The Perseid Meteor shower is August 12/13. Bring a friend, a red filtered flashlight, shade, lawn chair, and telescope and binoculars if you have them. The Glenwood Street Market, featuring arts and crafts, and food, is growing. New vendors are adding even more variety to the selections. The latest addition is home-made ice cream. It is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood.
Mogollon is back in business after a year-long road closure due to a major construction project. The museum, the Old Kelly Store which features all sorts of hand-crafted items and art and the popular eatery, the Purple Onion, are now open. Check out this unique ghost town on weekends all summer long.
