Katia Cardenal started singing at the choir of Teresiano College in 1978, at a very young age. In 1979 she became a member of a student group that interpreted Nicaraguan music. She started her musical career as a professional in 1980, with her brother Salvador Cardenal (1960-2010) as the Guardabarranco Duo.

Cardenal wrote from a country in trouble. Her songs deal explicitly with women’s struggles to find their strength and include recurrent themes of encouragement of women, love of family and songs by and about her family. The songs she wrote with her brother focus on environmental integrity and human integrity. Stories and songs full of wisdom, wit, and wistful yearning for sanity.
