SC DDLM 2018Ofrendas may be simple or elaborate, as shown in this one at Mariah’s Copper Quail Gallery during the 2017 Silver City Dia de los Muertos .Planning is underway for the annual Silver City Dia de los Muertos, running from October 28 through November 2. It will include a parade, a street festival, mariachi music, food, and much, much more. An important part of the Dia de los Muertos tradition that honors the cycle of life is the showcasing and sharing of ofrendas. There will be a community ofrenda this year where all are welcome to add a picture of a departed loved one to the altar.

During this annual event there are many ofrendas throughout the businesses in the downtown area as well as at the University and other public establishments. Those businesses and others participating this year are urged to contact Diana Ingalls Leyba so that your location is added to the list and she can give you guidelines.

At 5 p.m. on November 2, the Blessing of the Ofrendas Procession will begin at the Silver City Museum, wind through downtown, stopping at ofrenda locations to bless each altar and ending at the 3rd floor of the Student Memorial building at Western New Mexico University where the community ofrenda as well as other ofrendas will be located. Some transportation will be available for those unable to walk the route.

Individuals who would like to participate with an ofrenda to honor a deceased loved one are invited to do so. They may be simple or elaborate. Offerings of flowers, food, photographs and objects loved by the departed may be left on the altar. The base is often ornamented with special decorations or skeleton figures, toys or heirlooms from the family.

For more information on constructing and displaying an ofrenda , or questions on the procession you may contact Diana Ingalls Leyba at 575-388-5725 or leybaingallsart@qwestoffice.com.
