pflagSilver City, NM, April 2, 2019—PFLAG Silver City’s annual scholarship benefit dance, Woodstock Southwest, is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 7:30-10:30 at the Old Elks Lodge on Texas St. Tickets are $10 per person and are available in advance at Vintage Fantasies or at the door.Vicki’s Eatery will be selling beer, wine and snacks. Proceeds benefit the Nancy Kailing Memorial Scholarship at Western New Mexico University.The dance theme honors the 50th anniversary year of the famous and infamous Woodstock festival of 1969 that featured such musical greats as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Santana. The costume contest with prizes will be overseen by celebrity judges Raul Turrietta and Patsy Madrid. Everyone is encouraged to dress in tie dye, bell bottoms, love beads, flowers, and other styles of the era.

PFLAG president Damie Nelson said, “For a lot of folks in Silver City, finding a costume for this dance just means opening up the closet and grabbing whatever is there.” Hippie styles are also available at Single Socks and The Swag Shop. The Big K Music and Light Show will be playing music from the Woodstock festival, plus other hits from the late 60's and early 70's.The Nancy Kailing Memorial Scholarship honors the former president of PFLAG Fairbanks, Alaska, and PFLAG Silver City. Nancy Kailing was a PFLAG mom and a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
