Tom Stewart has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Sixth Judicial District Court Judge, Division I. Stewart is a long-time southwest New Mexico attorney in private practice since 1985. He has a diverse background in the law and has represented people in virtually every kind of legal matter including injury, medical malpractice, family law, criminal, products liability, probate and commercial cases.

Stewart said that he is “looking forward to using my legal experience as a district court judge for the people of Grant, Luna and Hidalgo counties. Being a judge is a serious matter. If you have to be in a courtroom, you want an independent and impartial judge who applies the law correctly, impartially and consistently.”

Stewart is married to Christine Stewart, a Silver Schools social worker. He has three stepsons: Josh Blair, Caleb Blair and Jesse Blair and four grandchildren. Stewart attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from Cobre High School. He attended New Mexico State University, earned his bachelor’s degree from Creighton University and graduated from the University of New Mexico Law School in 1985. Before becoming a lawyer he was a radio broadcaster, newsman and a restauranteur. Stewart is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of New Mexico and is a past board member of the New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association and the Mimbres Region Arts Council.

Voters in Grant, Luna and Hidalgo counties will fill a vacancy in the district court for a full six-year term in the November 2018 general election. The vacancy was created when Judge Henry Quintero retired last year. The primary election to nominate candidates to be on the November general election ballot will be held on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 with early voting starting on May 19, 2018.
