Dr. Laura BoydDEMING, NM — Dr. Laura Boyd has officially filed to run as a Republican candidate for state representative in House District 32. The district spans Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna counties, and it includes the communities of Deming, Lordsburg, and Columbus.

Dr. Boyd grew up in the New Mexico rural community of Monticello in Sierra County. She graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences and went on to pursue her undergraduate degree at West New Mexico University in Silver City. Dr. Boyd received her medical degree from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico and served her residency with Southern New Mexico Family Residency Program in Las Cruces.

Dr. Boyd currently works at the Ben Archer Medical Center VA Clinic in Truth or Consequences. She is married and lives in the community of Las Uvas with her family. Dr. Boyd is a proud descendant of Irish and Mexican immigrants, and her grandmother, a native of Aguascalientes, Mexico, was one of the first Hispanic women to graduate from the College of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Texas, now known as the University of Texas-El Paso.

"Running for the House District 32 seat gives me a chance to make a difference on a larger scale," said Dr. Boyd. "People living in New Mexico's rural communities want to have a voice in the shaping the policies that affect them, and not be subject to the whims of Santa Fe-based party leaders that don't understand the needs of our rural communities."
Dr. Boyd continued, "I pledge to truly represent the citizens and taxpayers of District 32 and not be swayed by party agendas. I will base my votes on the best interests of the district. Their concerns are my concerns."

Dr. Boyd outlined four main areas of focus for her campaign: healthcare, rural economic development, agricultural issues, and border security.

As a medical doctor, she can provide a perspective currently missing from the Legislature. No healthcare provider is currently serving in the Legislature, and healthcare policy debates are dominated by lobbyists representing the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Dr. Boyd will keep legislators focused on issues that matter to patients and healthcare providers.

Rural communities in New Mexico want local control and the authority to control their own destinies. Too often, they are at the mercy of policies dictated by people who have no idea what life is like in rural areas or the real issues concerning them. Dr. Boyd will use her understanding of agricultural life to help New Mexico's rural towns and villages succeed.

Regarding border security, Southern New Mexico's agricultural economy is dependent upon the many hard-working people dedicated to building a better life for themselves and their children. However, we must protect against criminal activity on the border and those who abuse our system. Our state leaders have an obligation to ensure that residents living near the border are safe and secure.
