On Monday May 22, 2017 around 8:15 a.m., a New Mexico State Police officer was notified of a vehicle crash on State Road 90 at mile post 37. While en route to the scene, the responding officer learned that the situation had escalated.

When the officer arrived on scene, he learned that Michael Aguirre, (40) of Silver City, NM, had driven his vehicle and deliberately forced another vehicle off the road, causing the crash. Mr. Aguirre then threatened the passengers of the second vehicle, who were family members, including three children, with a fixed-blade knife while attempting to gain access to the vehicle. The incident was the culmination of an ongoing domestic dispute.

Mr. Aguirre then fled the location on foot into the outskirts of Tyrone Town Site, NM. He was found hiding under a bush by Silver City Police officers and subsequently taken into custody.

Mr. Aguirre was transported to the Gila Regional Medical Center for medical treatment due to injuries he sustained in the crash. While he was at the hospital he was under 24-hour guard due to being under arrest for violating a court order from a previous offense investigated by the Grant County Sheriff's Department.

Upon his release around 5:00 p.m. today, Mr. Aguirre was arrested by State Police and charged with the following: Aggravated Battery on a household member (20 counts); Abuse of a child (3 counts); Aggravated DWI; Possession of a controlled substance; Resisting, Evading, Obstructing an Officer; and Aggravated Stalking. Mr. Aguirre has been booked into the Grant County Detention Center.

This ongoing investigation is the result of a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies within the Grant County area. No further information is available at this time.
