Quemado, NM, June 29, 2017 -- The Baca Fire, at approximately 11,139 acres, is located on the Quemado Ranger District, Gila National Forest and has been burning since May 12, 2017.

Quemado District Ranger, Emily Irwin stated ”Based on the information received over the past two weeks we do not expect an additional increase in acres burned.” The fire will continue to be monitored by Mangas Lookout and patrolled by local fire resources until the summer rains are established. There has been no reports of smoke from the Lookout since June 24, 2017.

The Baca Fire area closure will be rescinded on June 30, 2017 at 1000. Forest Service Roads 13, 13D, and 93 will be open to the public. The segment of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) from Dead Horse Canyon north to Highway 60 will also be opened for hikers on June 30, 2017.

Recreationalists are encouraged not to walk into the fire. Hazards remain within the fire footprint including fire-weakened dead and live trees and stump holes. Fire weakened trees are more susceptible to falling, especially if it is windy.

Dispersed campers are encouraged to set up their camps outside of the burn area.

There are no fire restrictions on the Gila National Forest. If you choose to have a fire, please make sure to use water to extinguish it. With the Fourth of July weekend, visitors are reminded that fireworks are prohibited on National Forest lands.
