Kelduyn Garland, PhD, DDKelduyn Garland, PhD, DD, who retired to Silver City, N.M., at the end of 2012, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health by the Association for Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health (APPPAH) - an international medical and mental / behavioral health and related fields professional organization. The award is the ‘Nobel prize’ in this professional field.

She is one of the pioneers in Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health . . . having worked in the field for more than 45 years as a BodyMind therapist, consultant, educator and author . . . and a 'GrandMother' of APPPAH, having joined the organization shortly after its inception 35 years ago.

She has been an active in the APPPAH organization throughout these years, presenting on her work and findings at most of the Congresses since 1987, as well as serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal (Journal of Pre and Perinatal Psychology) since 1989, and on its Board's Ethics Committee. She also created and developed the Continuing Education Program for APPPAH in 1997, which offers continuing education credits to many professionals under 5 different professional categories.

Kelduyn received her PhDs from St Regis University in Psychology, with an emphasis in Pre and Perinatal Psychology) and Redding University—in Psychology, with an emphasis in Gerontology and the Psychology of Aging; in Marriage and Family Therapy; and in Child and Family Development, her MSW from the University of Denver, and her BA from Wheaton College, Ill. She has also received a Doctorate of Divinity. She trained as a Montessori Preschool Educator in the 1960s. Her clinical mental / behavioral health training, in which she mentored for more than 7 years, was in developmental “reparenting” therapy, gender scripting, and loss and grief. She also mentored in BodyWork and trained in Massage Therapy with the world’s authority on living fascia—connective tissue—in the mid 1970s. Over the years she evolved her BodyMind work, which she calls InnerConnections, into BondingAttachment therapy.

She was Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the States of Florida and Colorado, as an Independent Social Worker (LISW) in the state of New Mexico, as well as a Massage Therapist (LMT) in the State of Florida, and a Florida Continuing Education Provider for mental health professionals. She has also been a Certified Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner for almost 40 years.

Her 9 years of pre-graduate work included training and working as a Montessori preschool teacher in Illinois, and working in Geriatrics and Adult Disability, as well as a Family Services, and Court Dependency/Child Welfare Worker for the states of California and Colorado.

♥ Providing clinical services to Department of Juvenile Justice BootCamps and Youth Academy programs for incarcerated female and male juvenile / adolescent criminals and their families;

♥ Certified Court Evaluator in Guardianship Matters;
♥ Expert Witness for domestic / family and juvenile courts throughout the United States; and
♥ Emergency Mental Health Triage for a community mental health center.

She was co-founder of the Reproductive and Perinatal Grief and Loss Seminars that trained medical, mental / behavioral health, and human services professionals nationwide during the 1980sand 1990s. In addition to serving on the founding Board of Directors of one of the first free standing midwifery Birth Centers in the US in the 1970s, she also served on the Board of Directors of Co-Creation for a Joyful Birth, a midwifery birthing practice and pre and perinatal education program during the early 2000s.

As one of the Co-Founders of ATTACh in 1989 (Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children—an international association for professionals and parents concerning attachment loss, trauma and disorders), she served on its founding Board of Directors, was a Clinical Member of the organization, and presented at the organization’s annual conferences on many aspects and the impact of Pre and Perinatal BondingAttachment dynamics, trauma, loss and disorders in both children and adults for over 20 years.

As an Educator, Kelduyn has held various positions as adjunct professor, guest faculty and guest lecturer in universities and colleges, as well as teaching and training neonatal and pediatric medical staff, and family practice physicians and staff, as well as mental / behavioral health professionals throughout the US, and in Southeast Asia. She has presented at professional conferences / congresses and medical consortiums / support groups and organizations throughout North and South America on BodyMind dynamics, Reproductive Perinatal, BondingAttachment, and loss and grief issues. She is the USA co-Director of Whole-Self Discovery and Development Institute, Inc. International, which is headquartered in Holland, and is on faculty and a member of the Scientific Board of the Prenatal and Life Sciences University in Athens, Greece.

Numerous articles on newborn development and perinatal loss and grief she authored have been published in professional journals and newsletters during the past 40 years. She is one of the original co-author of the top selling neonatal medical textbook, Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care. It’s the chapter she co-authored that is the ‘swing vote’ for purchasing this textbook over others.

Prior to her retirement to a remote little mountain town in southwest New Mexico, Kelduyn was active in Perinatal Psychology (pregnancy, birth, early infancy and childhood BondingAttachment, and family development), co-dependency / gender scripting, and Loss and grief / death and dying / major life transitions. She had a private practice (InnerConnections) as a BodyMind therapist, consultant and educator, specializing in Bonding from the Beginning, Reproductive and BondingAttachment dynamics, trauma, and loss and grief issues, supporting and assisting people with
Birthing In . . . Birthing Within Themselves . . . and . . . Birthing Out.

She continues to provide these services to people, groups and organizations, and teaches on these matters when requested / invited.

In service to the community where she lived before retirement, Kelduyn served on the local public school system’s Early Intervention Council and also the county’s Juvenile Justice Council, and was active in several local service organizations. She was also a Disaster Mental Health Services volunteer with the American Red Cross.

In the fall of 2009, Kelduyn discovered Silver City when en route from Santa Fe to Las Cruces, N.M. What her friends described to her about the town was exactly what she was looking for as a place to retire. She first visited here in January, 2010, and fell in love with the town area. Until her retirement at the end of 2012, she visited there several times a year to get to know the town and people, and began teaching classes through WILL (Western Institute of Lifelong Learning), so that when she retired and moved to Silver City she was already integrated into the community and was coming ‘home.’

Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the proposed Bridge Community - a continuum of care retirement community (CCRC) for seniors in planning for development in the Silver City area of southwest New Mexico - and the Recycling Advisory Committee for the town of Silver City. She is active in AAUW and other service projects in Silver City. She has also served on the Providers’ Advisory Council of Compassion and Choices of New Mexico.
