November 2, the third day of Días de los Muertos celebrations, is known as All Souls Day, and is when the souls of the beloved are said to visit their loved ones. Altars or ofrendas, are made; traditional Días de los Muertos decorations such as skulls, marigolds and candles are combined with the deceased’s favorite things.
Thursday afternoon people gathered on the lawn of the Silver City Museum to listen to the singing of Angelica Padilla, and enjoy refreshments offered by the Museum.
They also gathered there to learn about Días de los Muertos, and to take part in an ofrenda procession, visiting various ofrendas located in downtown Silver City galleries and businesses. Each participant carried a small electric tea candle, and at the various stops would light them, while those who created the ofrendas told a little about the person for whom the ofrenda was made.
Jennifer Stroehmann, who guided the group to the various locations, would then offer a prayer and contemplation with the group.
