Individuals and Groups Invited to Help Carry Bones to Permanent Site

One Million Bones-THE PROJECT has arrived at Bear Mountain Lodge (60 Bear Mountain Ranch Rd.) in Silver City. On behalf of Western New Mexico University, the Town of Silver City, and Grant County, the Bear Mountain Lodge owners are thrilled to say Bear Mountain Lodge will be its permanent home.

Bear Mountain Lodge views One Million Bones as not only public art but also as a chance to make a small inroad into world peace. The installation will create a space for reflection and thought.

As of today, 57 crates are stacked by the stables, ready to go up the hill to the ridge where One Million Bones will be installed.

Any group may commit to hauling a pallet (about 600-800 pounds) of the ceramic bones to their permanent site. Gila Back Country Horsemen, Syzygy Tileworks, and Virus Theater have already committed to bringing bones up the hill. To have your group included, call Bear Mountain Lodge at 575-538-2538.

Members of the public are invited to bring pieces up the hill on Dec. 6, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Participants should bring water and backpacks to carry the bones.

To create a record of the community’s participation, Bear Mountain Lodge will provide a guestbook where those who help carry bones can enter their names or sign in with their groups.

Walking pieces of the installation uphill will take about 45 minutes roundtrip. “The journey will not only get you out for an invigorating hike but also inspire you,” says Linda Brewer of Bear Mountain Lodge.

One Million Bones-THE PROJECT is an international art installation that was on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on June 8-10, 2013. A project of The Art of Revolution, the installation raises awareness of ongoing genocides and mass atrocities in the world. A TED Talk on the project and a video about the installation and its creation are available at TheArtofRevolution.org.
