On Saturday, the Town of Silver City celebrated Territorial Charter Day, the Saturday closest to February 15, when, after much political acrimony, including a threat to secede and join Arizona, a bill was signed in 1878 authorizing a Territorial Charter for Silver City. This allowed residents to elect city officials and participate in self-government.

Mayor Ken Ladner, Grant County Assessor Raul Turrieta, Town Attorney Robert Scavron and former Mayor Mike Morones gathered at the Silver City Museum Annex to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the signing.

Mayor Ladner said that the town had formed a committee of various organizations who worked together to bring more events to be enjoyed during Territorial Charter Day.

In addition to the reenactment, the audience was entertained by Danny Cordova and Bayou Seco.
