On Thursday, Sept. 7, 2018, at approximately 6:36 p.m. a Silver City police officer was dispatched to 3814 N. Gold Street in reference to a domestic dispute.

According to a Silver City Police Department narrative, the officer had contact with a female victim. The victim stated her schizophrenic stepson, Alexander Olea, 37, of the address, started acting crazy and attacked her by punching her in the top of her head, her left arm, and her chest. The officer reported she saw a large bruise on the victim’s chest and her left arm was red and swollen. The victim stated when her husband stepped in to help he was taken to the ground by Alex and he began punching her husband in the back and ribs. The officer advised she observed the husband having a hard time breathing and was hunched over in pain.

The officer, according to the narrative, spoke with Alex, who appeared jumpy and uneasy. He stated his parents were putting something in his pancakes and he had to throw them up this morning. Other officers arrived and Alex was told to stand up and put his hands behind his back. Alex, the narrative stated, waked toward the first-responding officer and pushed her into the chain-link fence. He then ran toward the back of the yard and charged a sergeant at which time Alex was tasered, unsuccessfully. He then charged the sergeant again, the narrative said, and they both went to the ground and Alex struck him in the head with a large rock and the sergeant began to bleed heavily from the head, staggering him. The first-responding officer then pulled her weapon and ordered Alex to get on the ground and another officer tasered Alex again, again unsuccessfully.

At this point, according to the narrative, Ernest Olea Jr., 40, of the address, a brother, grabbed the tasering officer in a choke hold and Alex began throwing rocks at the first-responding officer. Raymond Olea, 59, of the address, an uncle, then jumped in front of Alex and the first-responding officer’s weapon and Alex ran out the gate and around the house, where Alex was pepper sprayed, unsuccessfully. Alex then smashed the windshields of two patrol cars with rocks, was chased across the street, and taken into custody with the help of other arriving officers.

EMS arrived on scene, the narrative said, and the tasering officer was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center for treatment of his head wound while the first-responding officer was treated on scene for breathing problems.

A Grant County sheriff’s deputy transported Alex to GRMC for medical clearance and then to Grant County Detention Center for booking.

Alexander Olea was charged with two counts each of aggravated battery on a peace officer, aggravated assault on a peace officer and battery on a household member; and one count each of battery on a peace officer, criminal damage to property, and resisting a peace officer. Ernest Olea was charged with one count each of battery on a peace officer and resisting evading or obstructing a peace officer. GCDC staff told the Beat on Sept. 13, 2018 that Alexander Olea remains in custody. Ernest Olea was booked into GCDC on Sept. 7 and released on conditions the next day.
