Showmanship conchos and buckles were also awarded to the youth that exemplified what it means to be a true showman in the ring. The youth were judged based on how well they showed their animal in the ring. The Grant County 4-H members that were selected for the showmanship awards are as follows:

Senior division youth get selected to get put into a Round Robin Show where they all must show an animal from each class (Steer, lamb, goat, swine). This is to compete for the All-Around Showmanship Award Buckle. Winners of this year’s All-Around Showmanship Awards went to:

A Clean Barn Award is presented to the youth that maintained a clean area and clean pens in each animal barn. They are judged anonymously all week long to determine who kept their area the most kept. The 4-H members who earned this award are as follows.

The Top Ag Youth Award is given to a senior member who is recognized as Grant County’s top agriculturally involved youth 4-H member. It can only be won by a high school junior or senior and can only be won once. Youth had to submit an application prior to fair to be judged by a panel of judges. They look for a well-rounded applicant who are involved in other endeavors outside of Agriculture such as clubs, sports, church activities, and community involvement. A buckle is awarded to the youth the panel determines to be most deserving. This year’s Top Ag Youth Award was awarded to Raelynn Moon. She is a senior at Cliff High School and has been active in Grant County’s 4-H program since she was a Cloverbud.

Grant County 4-H puts together a livestock judging competition during the County Fair. All age groups are welcome to participate and first place in each division wins a buckle. The winners of this year’s livestock judging competition were as follows.

Along with all the excitement at the show ring, many members entered projects into the indoor exhibit building. 4-Hers work all year long on their projects including photography, art, sewing, baking, and produce. This year’s winners for the 4-H Indoor Exhibits were as follows.

Grant County Extension Services puts together a baking contest every year. This year it was sponsored by Rebecca Dow, Billy Billings, and Yvette Harrell. The money made from this contest sponsors a scholarship for senior 4-H members graduating from high school. There is an adult and youth division and everyone is encouraged to enter. The categories included cakes, cookies, pies, quick breads, and yeast breads.

For the cakes contest, the judges were Jared White and Theresa Haggerson-Lucero. The winner were:

Grant County 4-H members finished the fall showing season by competing at Southern New Mexico State Fair September 26-29. The following are the placings for Southern New Mexico State Fair.

National 4-H Week:
Grant County 4-H participated in this year’s National 4-H Week which was October 7-13. A canned food drive competition between the 4-H clubs was held as part of member’s community service. Club leaders and members brought in non-perishable foods all week long to be donated to the St. Francis Newman Center Food Pantry. Wranglers 4-H Club won the competition with a total of 183 items donated. White Signal 4-H Club was 2nd with 91 items, Spurs 4-H Club was 3rd with 77 items, Mangus 4-H club was 4th with 40 items, Lone Mountain 4-H Club was 5th with 3 items. A total of 394 items were donated and will be delivered to the food pantry by 4-H Council members. October 11th was wear green to school day in support of 4-H.

A huge thanks goes out to Silver City’s Tractor Supply and all of their employees for all of their help and contribution to Grant County 4-H during 4-H week. Tractor Supply sponsors the Paper Clover Campaign to raise funds for Grant County 4-H Council. Silver City’s store also put on a raffle and a picture day with your pet with all proceeds going towards Grant County 4-H.

Enrollment:
It is time to enroll for 4-H! Next year’s enrollment period is open now until December 19th. Any new member is welcome to stop by the Grant County Extension Services Office to pick up an enrollment form. Members can be any age from 5 years old to 18 years old and have the option to participate in a large variety of projects. You can find a project on everything from baking and sewing to shooting sports to animal projects including pet projects. There is something for everyone of all ages. Stop by the Grant County Extension Services Office at 2610 N. Silver Street to see what being a 4-H member is all about.
