On Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, those traveling on Highway 180 East might have noticed lots of folks in fluorescent green vests along the highway near Walgreens.

Those adults and children represented the Kiwanis organizations in Silver City. They included adult Kiwanis members, the K-Kids from Stout Elementary, the La Plata Middle School Builders Club, and the Silver High School Key Club.

Ben Duran, faculty advisor for the Stout K-Kids said the groups decided to work together with Silver City to pick up trash. "I've been a sponsor or co-sponsor for several years. I have worked with Vicky Thompson, Fred Baca, and Maurine Laney, who got the original charter for K-Kids here."

Alma Carson, Lt. Gov. of Southwest Kiwanis Division 7, which includes Silver City, Deming, Las Cruces and Socorro, said the day was Kiwanis International One Day all over the world, where clubs chose to honor a day of service.

"We are going all the way around the Walgreen's building," Carson said. She also said Duran is the "most awesome sponsor ever. He is our biggest cheerleader and keeps the kids involved."

Alma's husband, Bob, is the Kiwanis Club of Silver City president.
