Despite a penetrating drizzle, spirits were not dampened at the Kiwanis Annual Sing-off at Gough Park Friday evening. Kiwanis-sponsored clubs from four local schools vied for prizes, singing under the lighted gazebo and lit by the headlights of a truck parked nearby.

First, Mayor Ken Ladner presided over the lighting of the gazebo, then Bob Carson, president of the Kiwanis Club introduced each school’s club. The K-Kids of G. W. Stout School went first, singing four songs, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Jingle Bells,” “Up on the Housetop” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

The Builders’ Club, pre-K through 12th grade, from the Cliff schools, sang a local variation of “Jingle Bells” in which a passion for hunting was featured, were next.

They were followed by the Cobre High Key Club, who sang “Jingle Bell Rock” and finally, the Silver High Key Club sang “All I Want for Christmas is You.”

While awaiting the judges’ decision, the crowd sang “Joy to the World” and “Jingle Bells.” Cobre High took first place, followed by G.W. Stout in second, Silver High in third and Cliff Schools in fourth. Afterward, the group went to the First Savings Bank for hot cocoa and to look at the Christmas village in the lobby.

After the judging the students and families were invited to First Savings Bank across the street for warm cider and chocolate and goodies and to enjoy the Christmas villages from Alma Carson's collection.
