Saturday night, March 2, 2019, was the Silver City premiere of the independent movie, “A Boy Called Sailboat” which was filmed in Silver City with a cast of young locals.
The first of three sold-out screenings saw the young actors posing on a red carpet, with director Cameron Nugent, who flew in from Los Angeles to attend the event.
The film depicts the story of an unnamed desert town in the midst of a drought. A young boy, Sailboat, finds a ukulele and teaches himself to play it in order to write a special song for his Abuela. Most of the movie shows the reactions of the townspeople to the song, which changes them for the better.
Nugent introduced the film and talked about how he and his wife were driving east, planning to go all the way to the coast. They were scouting out locations for the movie, and when they arrived at Silver City, his wife said that this was the place. “We never went any further east than this,” he laughed.
He then had the young actors stand up, and they received a rousing round of applause.
After the film, there was a question and answer session. Nugent said that “A Boy Called Sailboat” was the first of a series of five films. The second on was to be located in Vancouver, and the third back in Silver City. He added that HBO had purchased the film, and that it was the only fourth independent film to be so acquired.
He asked the young actors what they thought were the best and worst moments of their experience. While the best experiences varied, almost all of them agreed that working in the “rain” which was the climax of the film was the worst. “It was cold, and we had to keep doing it over and over,” one of them said. “But at least you got wet, too.”
