The Grant County Sheriff's Department is updating this news release because of continuing issues with mail theft. Local law Enforcement agencies and the US Postal Service is advising all area residents who receive mail delivery in an unsecured mailbox or receptacle to take any/all precautions against theft of their mail. Area agencies have received increased reports of mail theft, all of which remain under active investigation.

Examples of targeted mail include checks, credit card or financial services solicitations, bank/credit card statements, mail with personal information and packages.

Some precautions that may be taken:

* Have mail held at your local post office for pick-up
* Install a locking mail box/receptacle with a suitable slot for the mail to be deposited into it
* Check your mailbox daily at the approximate time of delivery and promptly retrieve all mail in your box
* Set your financial accounts up for paperless transactions (internet-based management of your accounts)
* Ask a trusted person to promptly retrieve your mail daily
* "Network" with trusted neighbors to watch mailboxes for suspicious persons or vehicles in close proximity
* Report any thefts or suspicious activity to local law enforcement immediately
