According to Silver City Police Chief Freddie Portillo, Richie Ehrlich, age not available, of the Silver City area, was placed in protective custody by SCPD officers Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2019, at approximately 10 a.m. after contact was made on 12th and Santa Rita streets. This action was deemed necessary as he was exhibiting violent tendencies and was considered to be potentially harmful to himself or others. Ehrlich allegedly made threats against certain individuals at Calvary Chapel on Highway 90, Portillo said.

Ehrlich was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center for evaluation, where he “walked out” about 3 p.m. wearing a blue hospital gown and socks, Portillo stated. SCPD then issued an alert to residents that if Ehrlich is spotted to call Grant County Regional Dispatch Authority, but he should not be approached.

As of 7 p.m., Wednesday, Apr. 10, Ehrlich is still on the loose. SCPD, assisted by New Mexico State Police and Grant County Sheriff’s Department, is actively searching for the escapee.
