SILVER CITY-Each year New Mexico State University’s College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Science along with several organizations puts on the New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp. This camp is an intensive five-day hands-on camp all about cattle ranching. Youth from around the state of New Mexico and the nation compete for limited positions at the camp. The camp is held on CS Ranch in Cimarron, NM June 9-14, 2019.

Grant County 4-H Council President, Justin Billings is among the top youth that will be attending this year’s camp. Youth will be learning everything about the cattle industry and cattle ranching from standard cuts of beef, to cattle reproduction, genetics, nutrition, animal welfare as well as get practice on preparing and presenting a loan proposal to a panel of judges as if they were submitting the proposal to a banker.

Justin will be receiving three credit hours from NMSU upon his completion of the camp toward a degree in agriculture from NMSU. “This marks the second year in a row that a Grant County 4-H member has been accepted into this prestigious educational camp” Swapp said. “In 2018, our 4-H council president, Cursten Blanton was selected” Swapp added.

“I am really looking forward to attending Ranch Management Camp this summer. The hands-on learning opportunities available will equip me with valuable skills that I will be able to apply in the ranching industry. I’m grateful to have this opportunity to attend” said Billings.
